In the latter half of 2007, Matt has achieved a lot. His remix of “Gulf: Impossible” was selected by Motorola along with mixes by Judge Jules and Marco V for the new Razr phone, his underground mix on the retrospective album, “Gatrecrasher Immortal” released in September 07 following the fire at the Superclub is on course to sell an unprecedented 100,000 copies and he has just been voted no. 48 in this years Dj mag top 100 Dj’s poll. With the Motorola remix due for release and another hot collaboration with Mark Pledger “Falling Tides” due out on Anjuna Beats early next year, 2008 looks set to be another year of great gigs, great music and great progress!!!
Matt’s illustrious association with the global phenomenon that is Gatecrasher is something which has been well documented. Such an association would be seen by many as an accomplishment in it’s own right. It has seen Matt play some of the greatest events the world of clubbing has to offer. Whether it be playing at the sell-out Don Valley stadium gig in front of 28,000 people on New Years Eve 2000 or playing to 15,000 people at the amazing Gatecrasher NEC events- Matt has seen it all. However, in the last two years he has risen, not only to play a pivotal role in the Gatecrasher fold but to become an internationally recognised artist in his own right.
Matt’s growing reputation really came to the fore only as recently as the beginning of 2002 with the completion of his first Radio 1 Essential Mix. The mix struck a chord with clubbers and promoters the world over. The resounding success of his debut Essential mix had lead to radio 1 requesting a follow up in October 2005. This mix was so popular it was quickly short listed for the Essential mix of the year, only to be pipped to the post by Sacha.
When Simon Berry the Platipus records impresario was looking for, in his words a “rising star,” to mix their coveted tenth compilation mix CD- guess who he called first. With over 40 tracks and mixes from which to chose Matt came up with a fluid mix of progressive trance that won plaudits across the board.
Matt’s next challenge came in the shape of the world-renowned Gatecrasher compilations which need no introduction to fans of dance music. The Resident Transmission series was launched in October 2002 and Matt completed two compilations over the following one and a half years. The press and public reaction to Matt’s contribution to the package is something that Matt is very proud of. The success of the compilation was swiftly followed up by Matt debuting in DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs at a number 58. Matt has followed this debut appearance with four successive high appearances in the influential list, most recently @ no. 48 in the 2007 poll.
Matt’s position as Gatecrasher resident ceased in late 2004 and saw his Djing status blossom. He felt that the resident tag was inhibiting his development as a DJ in his own right. Matt’s departure was entirely amicable and it is testament to his ability that Gatecrasher regularly book him to play for them as a headlining guest. Demand for Matt was on the increase and he soon found himself playing for all the high profile organisations within the UK scene. The end of 2004 alone saw Matt making his debut at the likes of Godskitchen and Passion. Further, his international diary became ever more hectic. To date he has enjoyed successful tours throughout Asia, South America, Australia, Africa, Europe and the USA.
All this aside, it is perhaps Matt’s production profile which has come to the fore. His first two productions with trancetastic duo Smith & Pledger, entitled Day One and Connected, won support from the likes of Dj Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and Judge Jules and were snapped up by the highly prestigious Anjuna Beats label. The tracks have been included on over 30 compilations world-wide and in times of poor singles sales have achieved amazing sales figures. He has also had recent production success with fellow DJ John Askew. Their track “Slave to the machine” received a rapturous response… as did Matt and John’s Two Live as compilation albums. His lattest offering, “Fallen Tides” is due out on Anjuna in January 2008.
